How I find out if My Federal Tax Refund-Return will be Taken offset with your Student loans-by Treasury Department-Taxes
67Its Tax Season again and many Americans maybe suprised to find out they wont be recieving there tax return this year. Do you know how to find out if your tax refund will be offset or taken by the Treasury Department? If you owe a student loan, child support or State or Federal taxes your return could be taken. They may take your whole return or just part of your return. If you are worried about this pick up the phone and call this number, 1-800-304-3107.
Listen to the prerecorded message and do as instructed. Do not call on someone else as it is a criminal offence to call on someone other then yourself. You will need to enter your social security number when promted. The FMS will search there database to see if there is an offset against you. They will also give you the information if there is an offset against you, including the name and number. Write down the information and contact the creditor if you have any additional questions.
If you are married and file jointly and you find out your return will be offset, you maybe able to get part of your return back by filing an Injured Spouse form.
Things in life happen when we least expect it but if you do not want your tax return offset take care of your obligations, even if it is as little as 5$ a month. Creditors are less likely to go after your tax return if you make an effort to pay them. I currently owe a student loan and one year my tax return was also offset. I currently have 10% of my grose wages taken for my student loan but they no longer go after my taxes.
